Message in a Bottle

For better or for worse, here’s my latest bit of insanity: Message in a Bottle.

Sign-ups are open. Be afraid…

August 18 - Gypsies

Let your muse wander freely this week: the theme is gypsies. Your goal is just to make something—anything at all. You can draw, paint, collage, journal, make an ATC, or whatever else sounds interesting.

Have fun, and don’t forget to come back and post a link to your finished photos—or, you can upload them to the Make It Mondays Flickr photo pool.

The MIM Bribe Giveaway

Since the Summer Comment Giveaway was so successful in encouraging more people to post comments whenever they read articles, I thought I’d try the same idea to boost the participation in Make It Mondays. Here’s the deal:

  • Between August 17th and August 31st, make a piece of artwork based on any of the Make It Mondays themes posted. You’ll find the whole list of them here. Since MIM challenges never expire, you can post a piece of artwork based on any one of the themes at any time you wish.

  • Post a picture of the finished piece on your blog, web site or photostream. If you don’t have a blog or web site, just sign up for a free account at Flickr, and uploade the photo there. While you’re there, join the Make It Mondays Flickr group so you can add your photos to the pool.
  • Come back to Make It Mondays, find the post that reflects the theme of your artwork, and post a link to it in the comments for that post.
  • Each comment that links to a unique piece of your artwork will count as one entry in the giveaway drawing. That means you can only use a piece of artwork ONCE, and comment about it ONCE. If you want two entries, make two pieces of artwork, and post two different comments. If you post multiple comments pointing to the same piece of artwork, they will invalidate all your entries—so don’t do it!
  • On September 1st, I’ll draw one name to receive the giveaway goodies shown here. They include a watchmaker tin pendant, an altered candy tin pendant, a metal leafed sunflower medallion, an altered altoids tin, a wood bookmark and a hammered metal bookmark.

That’s it. Now, Go Make Something!

Julian Beever Chalk Drawings

I was watching Sunday Morning this morning, and they did a piece on Julian Beever. Here’s a quick video with an assortment of his clever artwork:

A Day at the Museum

Livia and I plan to hit the Kimbell Art Museum this week, for The Impressionists. This exhibit showcases 92 paintings from an array of Impressionist masters. We’re very lucky to have this museum in our backyards, because the Kimbell gets one or two intense, focused exhibits each year—often, exhibits that don’t appear in any other American city. Last year, Liv and I went to The Mirror and the Mask at the Kimbell, and spent the day wandering through about 100 portraits. I saw my first Frida Kahlo in person, a portrait by Van Gogh with a brush hair forever captured in the paint, and a group of portraits by Modigliani that made me start drawing again.

In October, I have tickets to the King Tut exhibt at the Dallas Museum of Art. I’m excited to see this, because I remember having seen the big King Tut tour that came through the US 26 years ago, and being profoundly affected by a couple of the pieces. I still remember being blown away by the four large gold statues of the goddess Selket, arms extended towards each other as if circling the pharoh to protect him.

Yes, I’m a museum junkie. I get a lot of inspiration from my days out amongst the artwork—so naturally, this week’s poll is about museums.

When was the last time you visited a museum or gallery?
